Massage School Accreditation

What is Massage Therapy Certification?
Certification is a voluntary review process available to schools. The purpose of accreditation is stated in the database relating to higher education institutions and programs accredited by the US Department of Education.

"The purpose of accreditation is to ensure that the education provided by higher education institutions satisfies acceptable levels of quality The accreditation body is a private education association in the region or country range and creates evaluation criteria, Conduct peer assessment to assess whether those criteria are met The institutions and programs that request institutional assessment and meet institutional standards are "certified" by that agency.

Many Florida massage schools have chosen to be certified, but many excellent massage schools chose not to pursue it. How this affects you depends on your massage therapy specialization and where you want to practice. The best thing to do is to investigate schools and determine whether the massage courses and programs offered are suited to your career efforts.

 Massage School Accreditation
Which school is certifying a massage school?
Several Federal approval agencies, including the following, evaluate and certified massage schools and universities.

  • Health Education School Certification Bureau (ABHES)
  • Career school and college accreditation committee (ACCSC)
  • Continuing Education and Training Committee (ACCET)
  • Certified Council for Independent Schools and Universities (ACICS)
  • Massage Therapy Certification Committee (COMTA)
  • National Beauty Science Arts Committee (NACCAS)
  • Accreditation by one of the above organizations opens the way for federal government loans and entitlements. Only students attending Federal government accredited schools are entitled to receive this financial support.

Do I need to consider certification when choosing a massage school?
Certification is one of many factors to consider when choosing a massage training program. The main consideration is the focus of your intended goal as a training program and massage therapist. Visiting schools before making decisions is as important as school 'feel'. Are you welcomed and comfortable in the school environment? Does the official of the school seem to understand the occupation of massage?
